Welcome! I am Gustavo Vela MD; ophthalmologist whose private practice is mainly in the city of Reynosa, Tamaulipas. The goal of this website is to share concise information of the services I provide. Diagnosis and treatment of eye pathologies
I always practice a thorough examination of your eyes with state of the art diagnostic equipment . The consultation includes: eyeglasses prescription, intraocular pressure measurement, biomicroscopy and eye fundus examination.
EYE SURGERY
State of the art technology, experience and ethical judgement
As an ophthalmologist sub-speciliazing in anterior segment microsurgery I am an expert in cataract surgery and intraocular lens implantation. I frequently perform refractive laser surgery (LASIK), pterygium surgery, glaucoma surgery and strabismus (squint) surgery.

LASER PROCEDURES
Different types of lasers for multiple eye pathologies
I perform LASER procedures such as: iridotomies, posterior capsulotomy and retinal panphotocoagulation. These treatments are useful for: glaucoma, posterior capsule opacification (also known as secondary cataract), diabetic retinopathy and retinal lesions.
ABOUT ME
I graduated from medical school at UANL (Monterrey, Mexico). After that I concluded ophthalmology residency at the first ophthalmological center ever founded in Latin America (Hospital de la Luz in Mexico City). In this same hospital I completed the fellowship: Microsurgery of the Anterior Segment of the Eye. This basically means that I am an expert in cataract surgery and intraocular lens implantation.
I am currently board certified by the Mexican Council of Ophthalmology and I am an active member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, the Mexican Society of Ophthalmology and the Ophthalmological Association of Reynosa. I have also approved the examinations of the International Council of Ophthalmology.
I keep my knowledge up to date assisting and participating in multiple ophthalmology meetings each year.
My hobbies are playing basketball and chess.

¿ACEPTA SEGUROS DE GASTOS MÉDICOS?
Si. Sin embargo, seguido existe confusión. La mayoría de estos seguros son de gastos médicos mayores, por lo tanto no cubren el costo de una consulta. Si usted requiere de una cirugía con gusto podemos entregarle un informe médico para que su seguro cubra los gastos de la cirugía en caso de que autoricen el procedimiento.
¿EXISTE DIFERENCIA ENTRE OFTALMÓLOGO, OPTOMETRISTA Y OCULISTA?
Si. Un oftalmólogo esta capacitado para el diagnóstico y tratamiento de las enfermedades de los ojos, incluso para realizar cirugías. El optometrista también es un profesional de la salud visual sin embargo al menos en México no puede recetar medicamentos ni realizar cirugías. El oftalmólogo dedica alrededor de 10 años para obtener su cédula. Ahora en cuanto a la palabra oculista es solo una forma coloquial o menos correcta de llamarle al oftalmólogo.
¿QUÉ ES UNA CATARATA?
Tenemos un lente dentro del ojo, este lente se llama cristalino y como su nombre lo indica, habitualmente está transparente. Una catarata es cualquier opacidad en ese lente. Las cataratas ocasionan problemas para enfocar, visión borrosa, doble o incluso ceguera. ¡La catarata es la causa más común de ceguera en el mundo! Afortunadamente se puede corregir con una cirugía.
